![]() Rickover's response to the decision to name the submarines after cities (and occasionally politicians influential in defense issues) was that "Fish don't vote." Development Rickover, named for the " father of the nuclear Navy." This was a change from traditionally naming attack submarines after marine animals, such as USS Seawolf or USS Shark. Submarines of this class are named after American towns and cities, such as Albany, New York Los Angeles, California and Tucson, Arizona, with the exception of USS Hyman G. As of 2022, 26 of the Los Angeles class remain in commission-more than any other class in the world-and they account for more than half of the U.S. Also known as the 688 class (pronounced "six-eighty-eight") after the hull number of lead vessel USS Los Angeles (SSN-688), 62 were built from 1972 to 1996, the latter 23 to an improved 688i standard. The Los Angeles class of submarines are nuclear-powered fast attack submarines ( SSN) in service with the United States Navy. Submerged: Over 25 knots (29 mph 46 km/h), official 33+ knots, reported īQQ-5 suite which includes active and passive systems sonar, BQS-15 detecting and ranging sonar, WLR-8V(2) ESM receiver, WLR-9 acoustic receiver for detection of active search sonar and acoustic homing torpedoes, BRD-7 radio direction finder, BPS-15 radarĤ × 21 in (533 mm) torpedo tubes, 37 × Mk 48 torpedo, Tomahawk land attack missile, Harpoon anti-ship missile, Mk 67 mobile, or Mk 60 CAPTOR mines (FLTII and 688i FLTIII have a 12-tube VLS).This centre will provide maintenance of sonars installed on minesweepers and FREMM frigates – which the Italian Navy also use. At Italy’s La Speiza naval base on the Ligurian Sea, the navy has established an “integrated services centre” for Thales to manufacture sonar technologies for submarines. This surety builds on Thales’ expanding responsibility for the Italian Navy too. Thales will ensure proactive component obsolescence management to further enhance the agility of the FREMM technical support teams, analysing system status on a regular basis to identify potential supply chain issues and speed problem resolution by experts from Naval Group and Thales. To troubleshoot and resolve technical subjects quickly and efficiently, the centre’s dedicated multi-disciplinary team will constantly monitor the technical performance of the Thales equipment and provide a rapid response capability at all times. Naval Group and Thales are also setting up an integrated centre of expertise drawing on the specialised know-how and capabilities of both companies. The operational availability of France’s FREMM vessels is a key factor in maintaining the country’s naval capabilities. ![]() The intensive deployment of warships and their systems puts added pressure on every component of a naval force. The combat system architecture enables the French Navy to integrate future weapon systems into the frigates. The upgradeable high-performance combat system by Naval Group and Thales is based on a high-speed data network. Herakles has a range of 250km against air targets and 80km against surface targets. ![]() These systems include Thales’ Artemis infrared search-and-track (IRST) system and the Herakles 3D S-band multifunction surveillance and fire control radar for the frigates’ anti-air weapons systems.Īrtemis is based on medium-wave staring focal plane arrays and uses multiple static sensor heads rather than mechanical scanning. Under this latest contract, Thales will specifically ensure the day-to-day availability of their on-board systems and sustain their operational capabilities over the long term. Thales is responsible for the development and supply of the French FREMM surveillance and communications suites. ![]() The frigates are 140m in length and 20m wide with a 6,000 tonne displacement. ![]()
